Embarking on a fitness journey is an incredible decision that can lead to improved physical health, increased energy levels, and a boost in overall well-being. However, the path to reaching your fitness goals is not always smooth. Often, it’s the mental barriers that pose the biggest challenges. Negative self-talk and lack of motivation can derail even the most determined individuals.
There’s also things like unsolicited opinions which is very common in the Indian culture.
It can range from “Oh you’re gaining weight” to “Oh, you’re exercising too much”
It can sound like, “Oh my gosh, I could never eat salad.” To “Oh that’s so unhealthy for you.” A lot of this can create body image issues, confusion and self doubt.
As South Asian women, we may face various mental barriers that hinder our progress towards optimal fitness and health. Common challenges include guilt, fear of judgment, societal expectations, and the perpetual struggle to find time amidst our busy lives. It’s essential to acknowledge these barriers and understand that while they may seem like obstacles, they are opportunities for growth.
Here are some strategies that you can use overcome these barriers, empowering you to embrace your health and fitness journey with confidence.
Set Realistic Goals
We often have unrealistic goals and expectations of ourselves. While it’s great to have ambitious goals, it’s crucial to be realistic and break them down into smaller, achievable milestones. The more realistic your goals are, you’ll experience a sense of accomplishment with each milestone you reach, boosting your motivation and confidence along the way and push you to keep going. So drop that idea of 10 kgs in 1 month goal!
Challenge Gender Roles
Traditional gender roles can create limitations when it comes to your pursuit of good health. However, it’s important to break free from these constraints and empower yourself. Embrace the idea that your health and well-being are just as important as any other aspect of your life. Giving yourself 1 hour in a day to work out, eat a nourishing meal should come as easily to you as working a 9-5 job or caring for your family.
Create a support system
The people we surround ourselves with greatly influence our thoughts and actions. Seek out a supportive community that shares your fitness goals and values. Join fitness classes, workout communities, online fitness groups where you can connect with like-minded individuals. Also communicate with your family and friends and let them know that you are on this journey and how they can support you. Often criticism of your choices can come from a lack of knowledge or even from a place of concern so communication is key to ensure that people around you can be your cheerleaders and not bring you down.
Focus on the Positives
A healthy and positive mindset is key to overcoming mental barriers. This is not about toxic positivity. Practicing self compassion, being kind to yourself and embracing a growth mindset can actually make you more productive in your health and fitness journey. Remind yourself that your journey is unique, and progress is made through consistency, not perfection. Celebrate every small victory and learn from setbacks along the way.
Stress management and mindfulness
Stress and anxiety often accompany our inability to establish a fitness routine. Incorporating mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga can help calm your mind and reduce stress levels. These practices improve self-awareness, allowing you to recognize negative thoughts and emotions, help you create some awareness on habits you can build or break and help you redirect your focus.
Overcoming your limiting self beliefs is an essential aspect of a successful fitness journey. By setting realistic goals, cultivating a positive mindset, surrounding yourself with supportive individuals, establishing a routine, seeking professional guidance when needed, and practicing mindfulness and stress management techniques, it is possible to make fitness just another piece of your life without letting it consume you.
Remember, every step forward counts, no matter how small. Embrace the process and enjoy the transformation that occurs within yourself, both physically and mentally.
